Prior to the 1950s, people had occasionally cooked outside over an open fire pit with either wood or charcoal using a metal pan or skillet. As you would expect there wasn’t much control over the cooking process or the results. The first modern barbecue grill was made in 1952 by George Stephan, a welder at the Weber Brothers Metal Works in Illinois. The original Weber Kettle grill started out as a round metal lake buoy, cut in half; add a wire grate, a handle, some legs, and you have the beginning of the backyard barbecue.
