Making the Perfect Manhattan!
Popular history suggests that this drink originated at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the mid-1870s, where it was invented by Iain Marshall for a banquet in honor of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden.
And it's still going strong today!
Steps
Fill a mixing glass or cocktail shaker with ice.
Add 2 oz of bourbon or rye whiskey, 1 oz of sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to the mixing glass.
Stir the mixture with a bar spoon until it is well chilled and properly diluted. This should take about 20 to 30 seconds.
How to make
Strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish the drink with a maraschino cherry and/or an orange peel.
Serve and enjoy!
Notes:
Some people prefer their Manhattan with a little bit of sweetness. If you prefer a sweeter drink, you can add a small amount of simple syrup to the mixture. Alternatively, you can use a sweeter vermouth, such as Carpano Antica or Cocchi Vermouth di Torino.
